Comoros Island Tour | Grand Comore

Comoros Islands: Grand Comore Culture and History | Day Tour from Moroni

We start up the day with a pickup at your chosen hotel anywhere in Grand Comore Island and briefing by our staff, after breakfast, and head around the circle road of the island to take in the towns, mosques, markets, and  history.

From here we spend the first part of the day sweeping through the mosque of Iconi and combing the haunts and history of the original inhabitants of the Comoran archipelago, who brushed the fame and fortunes of the Portugese traders and Magellan all the way to Captain Cook and the Libertalia Pirates. We head out to delve into spices and flavors that the island generates for the world...from Chanel Number 5's ylang ylang (the "flower of flowers" to bourbon vanilla (the "bourbon isles" were this chain spanning Comoros to Madagascar (where the plant was first grown in Nosy Be) down to Reunion (the inventor of the pollination method) and Mauritius. The bintang snack, coconut rolled with garlic and spices, is our evergreen favorite, but there is tons of delights to discover! We hit the white and black sand beaches of the ring road and circumnavigate the volcano the rest of the day, taking in some of the best and most secluded spots to last us up until sunset.

TOUR ITINERARY:

We will start at any hotel of your choice in the island, and head to the Iconi mosque first, where we will spend half a day meandering in the markets and mosques and labyrinthine sinews of the Comorian towns and souks. From here, hit the ring road to circle the island's black and white sand beaches while gazing up at the monstrous volcanic slopes of might Mt Karthala at the base. It can take the whole day for the roundtrip circuit through the island to the black sand and white sand beaches.

A lot of totally endemic plants and birds, all rare by their very essence of evolving on a remote detached island, live within the forest and some around the rock outcroppings lining the coast. We will try to spot them in the nature and cliffs today as we go.
