Day 1: Mogao Grottoes + "Dunhuang in Motion" Performance + Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake + Shazhou Night Market


Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center
The Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center is the starting point for visiting the Mogao Grottoes. With a total investment of over 300 million yuan and a total area of ​​100,000 square meters, it officially opened to the public in August 2014. It adopts an innovative model of "online reservation + digital display + physical caves," and has been promoted by UNESCO as a typical case of cultural heritage site.


【A Thousand Years of Mogao】presents an epic view of Dunhuang's 1600-year history, telling the grand narrative of the formation of the Silk Road and the eastward transmission of Buddhism.
【Dreamlike Buddhist Palace】The world's first 8K ultra-high-definition dome-screen film on Mogao Grottoes art showcases the details of seven classic caves on a 500-square-meter spherical screen, bringing the breathtaking Buddhist world within reach.

Mogao Grottoes (photography is prohibited inside) – “The Louvre of the East”

Located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, the Mogao Grottoes are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They contain 492 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 painted sculptures, spanning from the 4th to the 14th centuries, blending cultural influences from India, China, and Central Asia.
Regular ticket (Category A) includes 2 films + 8 actual caves with guided tours for an in-depth experience. Limited to 6,000 tickets per day – difficult to book. At least one month in advance is required.


Must-see caves:
Cave 96: Contains a 35.5-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue inside a nine-story building, the tallest Buddha statue in Mogao Grottoes.
Cave 17: The famous "Library Cave," where 50,000 manuscripts were discovered in 1900.
Cave 148: A 16-meter-long Nirvana Buddha.
Cave 57: "Beautiful Bodhisattva," with graceful lines.


Special Cave Tickets (Optional, at your own expense): The special caves open daily are not fixed and are rotated by the Dunhuang Academy based on the cave's preservation status. Please refer to on-site announcements for details. There are fixed sessions each day, and tickets are extremely limited (approximately 100 people per cave per day). During peak season, early queuing is required. Tickets can be purchased on-site via QR code or cash only; advance booking is not possible. Dunhuang Academy Art Museum: Exhibiting the "Dunhuang Harmony and Myriad Images" music and dance special exhibition, featuring over 70 music and dance murals and over 40 restored musical instruments.


【Important Notes】

Photography and flash photography are prohibited inside the caves. A guided tour is mandatory; independent exploration is not allowed.


【Practical Tips】

①Tickets are easier to buy during the off-season: From November to March of the following year, there are fewer tourists, making it easier to secure tickets for special caves.

②Caves 45 and 57 are the best: If you can get tickets for these two, congratulations! This is the ultimate experience of Dunhuang art. ③Please allow ample time: visiting the special caves requires at least 2-3 hours, so it's recommended to dedicate a full day to the Mogao Caves.


Dunhuang Museum – A “Living Classroom” of Silk Road History
The Dunhuang Museum was established in 1979, with a new building completed in 2011. Covering 16,000 square meters, its architecture incorporates cultural symbols such as the Great Wall, beacon towers, and ancient castles. The museum houses 13,524 artifacts (sets), including 138 national first-class cultural relics (sets).


Exhibition Hall 1: The Great Development of Dunhuang during the Han Dynasty - Dunhuang Han Bamboo Slips, telling the story of military settlements and border defense during the Han and Jin Dynasties.
Exhibition Hall 2: The Continued Development of Dunhuang during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties - Bronze Ware, Early Paper, and Border Military Supplies.
Exhibition Hall 3: The Prosperity of Dunhuang during the Sui and Tang Dynasties - Exquisite Silk, reflecting the flourishing of the ancient Silk Road.
Exhibition Hall 4: Tubo and the Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties - Various artifacts witnessing ethnic integration.
Exhibition Hall 5: The Development of Dunhuang during the Qing Dynasty - Modern and Contemporary Historical Remains.

The performance "Dunhuang in Motion"
The biggest feature of "Dunhuang in Motion" is its "cave-style immersive experience"—the theater itself is a replica of the Mogao Grottoes. The theater's interior extensively replicates the distinctive features of the Mogao Grottoes, including the Library Cave, Buddhist niches, lotus platforms, and caisson ceilings, making the audience feel as if they have traveled through time and are immersed in the real Dunhuang caves.
Technical Highlights:
①Utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as holographic projection, 3D wire work, mechanical devices, and immersive sound effects.
②Recreating over 50 ancient Dunhuang musical instruments, including the konghou, pipa, and panpipes.

The entire theater is a vast, boundless stage. Audiences follow the movements of Bai Xin, a musical genius from the Western Regions, exploring the various spaces of the theater from the ground up, gradually understanding the plot of the entire play.


Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake – A Desert Wonder of Sand and Spring Coexistence
Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake are world-renowned for the wonder of "sand never filling the spring, and the spring never drying up," and are hailed as the "First Spring in the Desert."


Best time to visit: 

Early morning (5:00-11:00 AM) 2:00 AM: Camel ride to watch the sunrise, experience desert off-roading and sandboarding – beautiful scenery with few crowds.
Evening (after 4:00 PM): Avoid the high temperatures, climb the Singing Sand Dunes to photograph the sunset and panoramic views of Crescent Lake, and participate in a stargazing concert.

Shazhou Night Market, located on Yangguan East Road in Dunhuang City, is the largest night market in Dunhuang, hailed as Dunhuang's "night view" and "folk painting," renowned for its distinctive local characteristics and rich folk customs.

Day 2: Western Route Day Trip (Yangguan + Yumenguan + Yadan Devil City)


Yangguan Ruins
The Yangguan Ruins are located about 70 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang City. Construction began during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (116-111 BC). Named for its location south of Yumenguan, it was a vital passage on the Silk Road.
Dundunshan Beacon Tower
①A 4.7-meter-high rammed earth structure, a Han Dynasty border beacon tower.
②Antique Beach Surface Remains:Scattered Han Dynasty pottery shards, bronze arrowheads, and Wuzhu coins; traces of rammed earth foundations are visible in some areas.
Yangguan Ancient Road:Preserves approximately 2 kilometers of cart tracks.
④Han Great Wall Fortifications Built with rammed earth and sand, constructed of red willow and reeds.
⑤Yangguan Museum: Covering an area of ​​100,000 square meters, it houses thousands of artifacts including stone tools, jade objects, pottery, and silk textiles, with over 3,000 pieces of cold weapons.
⑥Experiential Activities: Visit a replica of a Han Dynasty fortress, experience making a travel document, pottery making, and copying Han ⑦Dynasty bamboo slips. Protection Level: Gansu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit (listed in 1981)


Yumen Pass Site: 

Located at the westernmost end of the Hexi Corridor, more than 90 kilometers east of Dunhuang City, the Yumen Pass Site covers an area of ​​580 square kilometers and is a World Heritage Site. The remains include: 2 city sites, 20 beacon towers, and 18 sections of the Great Wall. Established during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, it has withstood over 2100 years of wind and rain, and is the most complete Han Dynasty defense system preserved in China, witnessing the convergence of Chinese and Western civilizations.


Yadan Devil City – A Geological Wonder Sculpted by the Wind
The Gansu Dunhuang Yadan National Geological Park is located about 168 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang City, covering an area of ​​398 square kilometers. It features over 5,000 ridge-like, wall-like, and tower-like Yadan formations, making it the world's largest and most geologically mature Yadan landform group. The eerie sounds produced by the wind blowing through the sand, combined with its unique landforms, have earned it the name "Devil City."
