2. Itinerary Overview:
Day 1: Altay → Wucaitan → Burqin
Five-Colored Beach – God's Overturned Palette:
This is a Yardang landform where the Ertis River, the only river in my country to flow into the Arctic Ocean, passes through. The best time to photograph it is one hour before sunset, when the colorful rock formations under the setting sun create a stunning contrast with the river valley oasis.
① The spectacular sight of "a river separating two banks, like two different worlds"
The Ertis River divides the Colorful Beach into north and south banks, presenting two distinctly different landforms:
North bank: Colorful cliff-like Yardang landforms, composed of red, reddish-brown, light yellow, and light green sandstone, mudstone, and conglomerate. The rocks are multicolored and strangely shaped, resembling colorful castles, monsters, and clusters of peaks.
South bank: Oasis, desert, and blue sky complement each other, creating a lush and verdant river valley landscape.
② A visual feast at sunset
The hour before sunset is the most beautiful time at Colorful Beach. The afterglow of the setting sun shines on the rock layers, creating a vibrant spectacle with predominantly red, interspersed with green, purple, yellow, white, black, and transitional colors. The colors are exquisite and enchanting. It is said that when the wind blows, strange sounds of varying lengths and pitches emanate from the gullies and under the rocks, adding to the mystery of this unique landform.
③ Profound Historical Heritage
Wucaitan (Five-Colored Beach) was once an important passage on the ancient Silk Road. Many ancient cultural sites, such as beacon towers and ancient city walls, are scattered around it, witnessing its long history.
Day 2: Burqin → Kanas Lake Deep Tour
Kanas Scenic Area – “A Fairyland on Earth, God's Backyard”
Kanas is a Mongolian word meaning “beautiful, rich, and mysterious” or “lake in the canyon,” and is also known as “King's Water.” Located in the northern part of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, 150 kilometers from the county seat, it is a high-altitude lake nestled in the deep forests of the Altay Mountains. The scenic area covers 10,030 square kilometers and is a national 5A-level tourist attraction in China.
① One of China's Most Beautiful Lakes – Kanas Lake
Kanas Lake has an elevation of 1374 meters, an area of approximately 45.73 square kilometers, and a maximum depth of 188.5 meters, making it China's deepest glacial moraine-dammed lake. The lake's water originates from glacial meltwater from mountains such as Kuitun and Friendship Peak. Shaped like a curved bean pod, it features six platforms jutting out towards the center of the lake along its shore, forming six bays, each with its own mysterious legend.
② The Mysterious "Lake Monster" Legend
Legend has it that a "lake monster" inhabits Kanas Lake, speculated to be a large freshwater carnivorous fish, the taimen (red croaker), reaching up to 10 meters in length. However, this has never been confirmed by actual observation. Exploring the lake's secrets from the fish-viewing platform is one of the most anticipated experiences for tourists.
③ Kanas Three Bays – A Hiker's Paradise
The three shallows formed in the upper reaches of the Kanas River are the essence of the scenic area:
Sleeping Dragon Bay:A series of winding shorelines formed by long-term erosion by the river, resembling a coiled dragon.
Moon Bay: The river meanders along the mountains, shaped like a crescent moon, a landmark of Kanas, where the water displays magnificent and ever-changing colors.
Fairy Bay:Enveloped in mist year-round, the scenery of mountains, lakes, and trees creates a fairyland atmosphere.
④ Diverse Landscapes Distributed Vertically
The scenic area is vertically distributed from top to bottom, including glacial snowfields, mountain snowfields, alpine meadows, and mountain grasslands. In autumn, the birch forests paint the slopes with shades of pale yellow, golden yellow, and orange, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.
Day 3: Morning Mist in Hemu → Return Trip to Altay
Hemu Village – One of "China's Top Ten Most Beautiful Villages"
Hemu Village is located about 30 kilometers east of Kanas Lake. It is a small village inhabited by Kazakhs and Tuva people. It is the largest of the three remaining Tuva villages in China, possessing a unique ethnic culture and profound historical heritage. It is hailed as one of "China's Top Ten Most Beautiful Villages."
① A Fairytale World in the Morning Mist
Early morning is the most beautiful time in Hemu. Tourists rise early and hike to the Haden Viewpoint (about a 20-30 minute walk) to overlook the panoramic view of Hemu Village. As morning mist rises from between the wooden houses, wisps of smoke rise from the chimneys, and the sunlight shines on the mountains, the entire village resembles a fairytale world. One tourist described it: "Seeing the morning mist and the sunrise was truly the beautiful scenery I had in my heart. The happiness at that moment is indescribable."
② Authentic Tuva Culture
All the houses in Hemu Village are simple wooden cabins, scattered across the valleys. Local ethnic minorities work in their courtyards, creating a serene and rustic atmosphere. The "century-old house" at the village entrance offers visitors a comprehensive "eat, stay, and tour" experience, allowing them to feel the village's century-long history reflected in the logs.
③ Natural Scenery in All Seasons
Autumn: Azure skies, flowing rivers, colorful forests and grasslands, and the rustic mountain village scenery are described as breathtakingly beautiful, defying description.
Winter: Snow-capped mountain peaks and wooden cabins scattered across the snow create a fairytale-like scene.
