Nosy Iranja Day Trip To The Turtle Island

To reach this island, it takes 1h30 by boat from Nosy Be. A crossing that may seem long to you, but the landscapes are so incredible, even during the journey, that it is worth it!

The island splits in two. To the west, Iranja Be or "the big island" of about 200 hectares which includes a magnificent fishing village. To the east, Iranja Kely is private. It has an intense vegetation, populated by endemic species and ferns, of about 13 hectares. This is probably the island where you will have the best chance of encountering sea turtles during your excursion. They come to lay their eggs at nightfall, an extraordinary discovery to experience and the luckiest will even be able to witness a birth. You can also observe different birds (terns, herons, sea eagles) during a beautiful walk in a lush tropical forest.

Nosy Iranja has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and this is not just a marketing slogan. It really is a unique place and there is nothing like it.  This is the perfect opportunity to snorkel! In warm, clear water, meet exotic fish, manta rays and sea turtles. If you decide to go between July and October, you may see humpback whales. If it's between October and December, it's the whale sharks' turn.

After sunbathing on a postcard-decorated beach, it's time to meet the villagers and the many fishermen who inhabit this heavenly place. The soul of this island is reflected in the culture of the inhabitants, where you can see huts built in ravinala, outrigger canoes and children playing at the edge of the water... On your way, you may have the chance to taste the banana fritters freshly prepared by the Malagasy. A true delight !

By visiting the heights of the big island, you will have the opportunity to see the lighthouse built in 1909 by the workshop of the famous Gustave Effeil, which offers an extraordinary view of the sea and all the neighboring islands. Built in steel, it overlooks the island of Iranja Be. Not far away, on Grande Terre, you can see the bay of Baramahamay, which is home to villages specializing in the construction of canoes and dhows.
