Set out on a once-in-a-lifetime trek to the unexplored Massifs of Makay in 10 amazing days! Travel to the southwest of Madagascar and go hiking via the Makay Massif to experience Makay at its best. Explore Madagascar's stunning natural beauty, which includes a multitude of gorges, rivers, woodlands, and savannahs, and observe how the terrain changes every hundred meters. You will also have the opportunity to meet the locals and discover the diverse Malagsy nature and wildlife.
Itinerary
Day 1 - Tulear - Isalo
Arrive at Toliara Airport. Your driver will meet you at the airport. Then, start your adventure with a drive up north to Isalo. Upon arrival, take time to freshen up and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 2 - Isalo - Beronono
Start the day with a journey North through the rugged and challenging Isalo Massif route, crossing a savannah, and arriving at the Mangoky River. Take a ferry across the river, then stop by Beroroha for lunch before continuing on the path that leads to Beronono at the Makay’s edge, where you will meet your local guide and porter team. Overnight in a bivouac at the edge of the Makay River.
Day 3 - Beronono - Makay
Begin your fun and exciting exploration into the Massifs of Makay. Although it is not well-known and left undiscovered, the Maky is thought to be a true haven for a number of extremely rare and uncommon species of flora and fauna. Embark on a thrilling adventure to get an insight into a largely undiscovered world by following a natural labyrinth. A hike into the Massifs of Makay is the ideal opportunity to unwind and re-establish a connection with nature, home to vast gorges and canyons of unparalleled beauty. Dinner and overnight by the Makay River.
Day 4 - Makay Massif
Breakfast at the camp, followed by a hike into an odd-shaped canyon and through shallow rivers. Although the area is mostly unexplored, its deep gorges are considered as wildlife sanctuary for different species of flora and fauna. Camp out next to a canyon at Nosy Lahy.
Day 5 - Makay Massif
Spend the morning exploring the Anosilahy Canyon before moving on to other canyons. You will also experience a series of ascents and descents before arriving at the sandy canyon of Sakamantse. Before going into the Behetaheta forest, which is a region straddling the districts of Beroroha and Morondava where you can witness Zebus running in the wild, Take a little lunch stop close to the mouth of the canyon, then continue to Behetaheta forest, which is a region bordering the districts of Beroroha and Morondava where you can witness Zebus running in the wild. Overnight by the shore of Lake Sariaka.
Day 6 - Makay - Beronono
Explore the stunning cave before returning to Beronono by trekking your way through a narrow path. Stop by Lake Sariaka to take in the breathtaking views of Lake Anosilahy and Lake Sariaka before reaching the mountain’s summit. Then, descend to the Ambinanitelo Canyon to get to the village of Beronono. Celebrate the conclusion of the Makay trekking excursion with the entire team, including the porters, guides, and cooks, to cap off the day..
Day 7 - Beronono - Ranohira
Depart from the campsite after breakfast, then travel over a desert landscape back to the Bara region. Upon arrival in Ranohira, settle in the hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 8 - Ranohira - Tulear - Ifaty
Travel to Toliara through different Sapphire mining communities and the Southern Savannah, passing by Baobab trees, beautifully painted graves, and traditional communities of the Southern tribes along the way. Upon arrival at Tulear, check in at the hotel, take time to freshen up, and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 9 - Ifaty - Tulear
Spend a day in Ifaty and discover Ranobe Lagoon, one of the world's most stunning lagoons and a well-known diving destination. Enjoy some time exploring the Ifaty - unwind, bask in the sun, enjoy some beach activities, and shop for souvenirs. You can also hop on the zebu cart to see the baobab forest, Vezo villages, and the beautiful Reniala Reserve.
Day 10 - Tulear
Check out from the hotel after breakfast. With the help of your guide, transfer to Toliara Airport for your journey back home.
