Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the uncharted Massifs of Makay in 10 spectacular days! Discover Makay South at its best by traveling to the southwest of Madagascar and hiking via the Makay Massif. Witness the landscape change every hundred meters as you explore Madagascar's spectacular natural splendor, which includes a number of gorges, rivers, woods, and savannas. Additionally, you will get a chance to get to know the locals and learn about a variety of distinct Malagsy flora and fauna.
Itinerary
Day 1 - Tulear - Isalo
Arrive at Toliara Airport. Your driver will meet you at the airport. Then, start your adventure with a drive up north to Isalo. Upon arrival, take time to freshen up and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 2 - Isalo - Beronono
Start the day with a travel through the rugged and challenging route, following the Isalo Massif. You will get a chance to stop by the village of Andriamanery, where most people depend on agriculture for their livelihood, and encounter some locals. Continue to Fandronarivo to admire the beautiful panoramic view of the Isalo Massif before stopping for a lunch break at Beroroha. Then, make your way to Beronono, crossing the Makay River by car. Upon arrival, meet and greet your local guide and porter team. Overnight in a bivouac at the edge of the Makay River.
Day 3 - Beronono - Beravitrazo
Begin your fun and exciting exploration into the Massifs of Makay. Although it is not well-known and left undiscovered, the Maky is thought to be a true haven for a number of extremely rare and uncommon species of flora and fauna. Visit the Mahatiny Cave to look for its well-known prehistoric artwork and learn more about Madagascar's Sakalava past. You will then enjoy a picnic lunch before heading to the Beravitrazo canyon where there is a great chance of encountering lemurs in the wild. Afterwards, ascend to the plateau and join the Beravitrazo campsite. Dinner and overnight by the Makay River.
Day 4 - Beravitrazo - Andranovinily
Trek and explore the Makay Massifs while taking in the splendor of nature as you continue your journey into the plateaus and pass by the Makay palm groves on your way to the Andranovily waterfall. Prior to arriving at Andranovinily, where you will camp, take in the beautiful scenery and the presence of the imposing Tsitondroy.
Day 5 - Andranovinily - Anosilahy
After packing up, hike around the Makay Massif before descending to the natural pools of the canyon and cooling off in their pristine waters. Before descending to the Anosilahy Camp, where there is a chance to see Zebus in the wild, you will have a picnic lunch in the canyon.
Day 6 - Anosilahy - Sariaka
Start the day by exploring the Anosilahy Canyon before moving on to other canyons. You will also experience a series of ascents and descents before arriving at the sandy canyon of Sakamantse. Take a short lunch break near the mouth of the canyon before entering the Behetaheta forest, an area bordering the districts of Beroroha and Morondava where you can see Zebus running in the wild. Spend the night in the Sariaka campground.
Day 7 - Sariaka - Beronono
Visit Lake Sariaka before you ascend to the summit of the mountain to enjoy the stunning scenery of Lake Anosilahy and Lake Sariaka. Then, descend to the Ambinanitelo Canyon to get to the village of Beronono. End the day with a celebration of the completion of the Makay trekking expedition with the entire crew, including the porters, guides, and cooks.
Day 8 - Beronono - Ranohira
Cross the Makay River and the Mangoky River on the way back to Ranohira in a 4x4 vehicle. Enjoy a picnic lunch and the beautiful panoramas along the way. Upon arrival in Ranohira, take time to freshen up and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 9 - Ranohira
Check out from the hotel after breakfast. With the help of your guide, transfer to the nearest airport for your journey back home.
