Travel to the Southwestern region of Madagascar and go hiking via the Makay Massif to experience Makay at its best. Explore Madagascar's stunning natural beauty, which includes a multitude of gorges, rivers, woodlands, and savannahs, and observe how the terrain changes every hundred meters. You will also have the opportunity to meet the locals and encounter the diverse Malagsy flora and fauna. Truly, a must-visit destination for any trekking and outdoor sports enthusiast!
Itinerary
Day 1 - Beronono
Meet and greet your driver at the designated pick up location before following the Isalo Massif trail, traveling through the rugged and challenging route. Stop by the village of Andriamanery, where most people depend on agriculture for their livelihood, and encounter the local community. Continue to Fandronarivo to admire the beautiful panoramic view of the Isalo Massif before stopping for a lunch break at Beroroha. Then, make your way to Beronono, crossing the Makay River by car. Upon arrival, come together with your local guide and porter team. Overnight in a bivouac at the edge of the Makay River.
Day 2 - Beronono - Morafeno
Spend the day filled with beautiful landscapes and fascinating stories as you visit the Mahatiny Cave to see its notable historic drawings and learn more about the past of Madagascar's Sakalava Ethnic Group. Continue with an ascent to the plateaus to take in the impressive scenic Makay in its entirety. If you are lucky, you may be able to encounter some lemurs before arriving at the Morafeno Campsite.
Day 3 - Morafeno - Anosilahy
Continue your journey through Makay and ascend to the plateaus’s summit to take in the breathtaking panoramas of the Makay Massif. Take time to explore the Makay Massif before descending to the canyon's natural pools to enjoy and cool off in its refreshing, pristine waters. You will enjoy a picnic lunch in the canyon before making your way down to the Anosilahy Camp, where there is a chance to encounter Zebus in the wild. Dinner and overnight at the Anosilahy Campsite.
Day 4 - Anosilahy - Beronono
Prepare for a long day of exploration as you trek through a canyon by trampling through water before enjoying a picnic lunch at the edge of the sacred lake to observe crocodiles and their tracks in the water from a distance. Then, exit from Makay Park to reach the Beronono Campsite, where you will stay for the night.
Day 5 - Beronono - Ranohira
Cross the Makay River and the Mangoky River on the way back to Ranohira in a 4x4 vehicle. Enjoy a picnic lunch and the beautiful panoramas along the way. Upon arrival in Ranohira, take a convenient transport to Airport or Station for your onward destination.
