Itinerary

Day 1 - Maroantsetra - Fizono

Take a canoe ride to Andranofotsy to start your Masoala adventure before setting out on foot through the Farankaraina Private Tropical Park. To go to the village of Fizono, where you will spend the night, pass through a number of vanilla, pepper, coffee, and clove plantations and stop at the Mahalevona Community for a picnic lunch.

Day 2 - Fizono - Ampofako

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the morning before packing up and beginning your hike via several streams and high mountains. While searching the Ambatolaidama forest's corridors for the elusive Red Ruffed Lemur, take in the breathtaking landscape of Masoala National Park. You will continue hiking until you reach Ampokafo, where you will pitch up camp for the night.

Day 3 - Ampofako - Tsararapaka

Start your hike through the most difficult sections of ascending the mountain after breakfast. From the summit, you can overlook Ampokafo and Manakambahiny, two villages with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Continue into the Masoala National Park, passing through forests, listening to the sounds of the Red-Ruffed Lemur, and witnessing a variety of birds. At night, camp at Tsararapaka in the heart of the Masoala National Park to  observe rare nocturnal wildlife just a few meters from the tents.

Day 4 - Tsararapaka - Marivorano

After breakfast, begin your journey to Marivorano. The hike is less strenuous due to the lack of mountains, but the first three hours of the hike are spent in the forest before reaching the Befilipo fields. Back in the rough forest of Masoala National Park, you will see several wildlife creatures, including the Red-Ruffed Lemur, Red-Breasted Couas, Blue Couas, and Madagascar Wood Rail. From Befilipo camping areas, get a chance to follow the riverside through the slippery rocks or even cross the river en route to Betsirebika for a picnic. You will then set up a tent next to the small town of Marivorano at night.

Day 5 -  Marivorano - Antanandavahely

Follow the main streams until you reach the main river, which grows stronger until Antanandavahely, where you can see birds, chameleons, and some muddy picnic areas. People used to live in a variety of camping grounds throughout Ambalavy, but the national park system compelled them to congregate in only a few places, where they eventually established communities, giving the impression that the forest had already been evacuated. Afterwards, take a canoe ride going to the small village of Antanandavahely, where you will set up a tent for the night.

Day 6 - Antanandavahely - Ambohitralanana - Antalaha

Get on a canoe boat and paddle down the river to the village of Ambohitralanana. See crocodiles lazing under the sun at the Onive River along the way. Upon arrival at Ambohitralanana, take a Taxi-Moto or Taxi-Brousse up to Antalaha.
