Yet another rural, far-flung, idyllic location that deserves much recognition for its nature reserves, unmatched birding opportunities and coffee growing soils. El Encanto Nature reserve is situated in the far south regions of the Huila district also known as the launch point to uncover the Guacharos National Park. These far-reaching landscapes are a great way to soak in the fabrics of rural Colombia.


Itinerary:

Day 1: El Encanto Natural Reserve

First transfer from San Agustin en route to the village of Palestina, the location of El Encanto Nature Reserve. Here you will be met by the lovely and charming Molina Cruz family as they welcome you to their humble abode. Afterwards you will have a chance to learn more about their inspirational story and passion behind every cup of coffee grown. You will also have a chance to witness various birding opportunities in these magical surroundings with more than 254 recorded species of bird, 7 of which are endemic. Following the introduction to the flora and fauna on the reserve, dinner will be served consisting of many foods cultivated through their permaculture ways.

Day 2: Los Guacharos National Natural Park

The hike gets underway in La Mensura with a small descent of roughly 2 hours (400m), then an ascent (500m) bringing you to the entrance of the park. Here you will enjoy lunch with some down time before you jet off on a 1.5 hr journey visiting a location in Lapaiz known as the Giant’s Pavement. Finally wrap up the day by heading back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 3: Caving and Exploring

Begin your day with a guided tour of Cueva del Indio along side one of our expert park guides. They will bring you across a main tunnel (750m) to Guacharos Cave which was named after the common nighthawk who resides there 6 months of the year (June - January). If you’re visiting outside this nesting period then you will cross over the Suaza RIver flowing through the cave. If you’re here during the nesting period you will head around the cave en route to the bridge avoiding any disturbance of birds. Afterwards you will trek back to the lodge for chill time and lunch. Following lunch you will have a chance to visit the beautiful La Cristalina waterfall before dinner and a good nights rest.

Day 4: Departure

Finish up in La Mensura with a final transfer to your next destination.
