Day 1: Arrival in San Salvador

Arrival at the airport of San Salvador today. We’ll bring you to your hotel in San Salvador.

Day 2: City Tour Of San Salvador

Full exploration of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, today and a great kick-off for your six-day tour. San Salvador has some similarities with European or American cities, but many factors make San Salvador unique. Apart from the colorful houses, busy squares and beautiful colonial buildings, there are modern malls, many new buildings and western fast food-chains. All around San Salvador we can find food stalls, markets - big and small -, and shops, bustling with people and the ever-present sound of reggaeton beats. We will tour around the old center, Zona Rosa and the Boulevard de los Héroes today. We’ll explore the Mercado Antiguo Cuscatlán, the Rosario Church, Plaza Libertad, the national theater Plaza Salvador del Mundo and other places of interest.

At noon you’ll get to eat your first pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador and we’ll go outside of San Salvador to the El Boqueron National Park where we’ll go on top of a volcano with splendid views over San Salvador. Afterwards we’ll head back to the city.


Day 3: Joya de Cerén and Tazumal and Ataco

Today we’ll visit the archeological sites of Joya de Cerén and Tazumal. Tazumal is one of the most important Maya sites in El Salvador and was an important ceremonial place and trading spot in the time of the Mayans. We’ll get to admire the Maya architecture, the great pyramid, tombs and also the ballcourt in which ball games were held after which the losers sometimes were sacrificed. Tazumal actually means "place where people are burned" in the Maya language.

Also on the menu today is Joya de Cerén, in the west of El Salvador, known for its well-preserved pre- village, buried by volcanic ash and lava in 600 BC. Joya de Cerén provides a unique look into the daily life of ancient Mayan society, as the ash preserved many artifacts and structures.

Day 4: Ataco - Coffee Tour - Santa Teresa Hot Springs

Today we’ll have a stop at a coffee facility as coffee is an important part of San Salvador’s identity and helped build shaped El Salvador and its culture, but also has a dark history and played an important role during the civil war and and repression by the elite who used to own all of the coffee plantations in El Salvador. Nowadays one cannot possess more than 245 hectares of land and 95 percent of all agricultural land is used to farm coffee by 20,000 farmers who often have less than 20 hectares of land.

We’ll start our tour at Ataco, a charming artistic little town hidden in the green hills and the coffee plantations. We'll visit one of the coffee processing facilities of the town and get to learn more about the world’s most popular drink and its production. We will also take our time to visit the village with its beautiful murals and then continue to drive the rest of the Ruta de las Flores and discover several charming little towns like Nahuizalco and Salcoatitan, as well as Izalco near the Izalco Volcano if time permits. 

Day 5: Beaches of El Zonte And Tunco

Today is all about beaches and El Salvador’s coastline. We’ll visit Playa El Zonte, not too far from Libertad, where we’ll also have a short visit. El Zonte is known for its relaxed atmosphere and for its strong waves which are popular among local and international surfers. We’ll also visit Tunco, a little further down the coastline and known for its beaches and surfing. It is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and surfers from around the world, but still doesn’t experience mass tourism, so the vibe stays relaxed. Tunco has several restaurants, cafes, and shops and is a great place to relax and enjoy the  beach life. At the end of the day we’ll go to San Salvador.


Day 6: Departure 

Today we’ll bring you to the airport, end of tour. If you are planning to continue your way overland to Guatemala or Honduras, please let us know if you need any assistance for border crossing and transport.
