  • Duration: 4 Days (approx.)
  • Location: Medellin

On this ultimate jungle 4-day expedition trip, get to live what few have by exploring a remote part of the mountains. The trip leads you to paddle down the entire navigable section of the Samana River and progressively stepping up to more and more technical whitewater. Enjoy the company and knowledge of some of the best whitewater guides and kayakers in the world.

This program is for outdoor lovers who want to challenge themselves while learning about one of the most bio-divers ecosystems on the planet. Let your guide unfold the history of the place that was for a long-time Colombia’s epicenter of violence, narco-trafficking, and guerilla warfare – now an example of the peaceful transformation of Colombia.

What to expect

Day 1:

After driving only 2 hours from Medellin, the adventure begins. Get ready for a life-changing experience and profound introspection into one of Colombia’s iconic rivers, the Samana.

Enter the Jungle with a 4*4 ride to a small hamlet where the trail starts. Mules will carry the rafts to the river, and we will trek downhill to reach the river.

After a great lunch and a safety talk, embark on the green waters of the river and immerse yourself into the iconic Colombian jungle. Reach our jungle camp located at the confluence of the Rio Verde and Rio Calderas. Camping hammocks and relax by the fire.

Day 2:

Wake up to the melody of the jungle and let your guide serve you a fresh coffee with a healthy breakfast. Choose to relax or do some bird watching.

Follow 4 hours of world-class whitewater! The best rapids are at the end! We will finish with a secret waterfall swim and a cold drink at the end of the day. Sleep once again by the river and let your guide explain the past of this region. Also, learn about the future threats to this pristine river such as hydroelectric dams.

Day 3:

Today, be ready for some wild rapids. As we enter the deepest part of the canyon, the currents pick up and the hydraulics created by the smooth granite boulders are incredibly fun to paddle.

At mid-day, enjoy lunch with a fantastic view over a tall waterfall and the only portage of the whole descent. To follow, the rapids become even bigger but never dangerous as there are flat pools after each of them. It’s not uncommon to see toucans, monkeys, and even felines like Tigrillos, pumas, and jaguars.

Toward the end of the afternoon, set up camp by a small tributary, with a natural swimming pool. Enjoy a relaxed evening, a few drinks, and a gourmet meal in the magical jungle ambiance. Sleep in hammocks and let your guide explain the different threats to the last free-flowing river of the region. Also, receive extensive hydrology and botany information, that will help you understand the importance of this place for Colombia’s ecological diversity and its unique characters.

Day 4:

Wake up for your last day of this epic adventure. Today, paddle the remaining 15 km of white-water, including some of the most iconic rapids of the run. White Russian, Chili Con Carne, and the Bagre gorge will surely get your heart rate rising. We will stop half way to interact with traditional gold miners and you may even be able to buy gold from them directly, the process they use is artisanal and has minimal impact on the river.

At the take-out, enjoy a cold drink and say goodbye to the Samana. A 4-hours ride back to Medellin. On the way visit the famous town of Guatape and other iconical landmarks of Antioquia.
