Caño Cristales is a series of remote rivers, waterfalls, and streams that have a unique biological wonder. Belonging to the Sierra de la Macarena Natural National Park, this remarkable body of water often dubbed as "River of Five Colors" or the "Liquid Rainbow" is the only one in the world that turns multicolored due to the vibrant aquatic plants that bloom for several months a year.
Day 1 - Arrival in La Macarena
Arrive in La Macarena in the morning, a village located just a few miles from Caño Cristales. Put your hiking shoes on and get ready for a day full of walking and cruising. After a quick boat ride, hike for an hour and reach Caño Cristalitos, an amazing natural spa with small ponds filled with algae that give this river its rainbow-like look. Venture further to El Mirador which offers a good vantage point to the wild savanna bordered by the Macarena Mountain Range. In the afternoon, you'll check-in at your lodging located only about 200 meters from Caño Cristal.
Day 2 - Caño Cristales
Today, you'll visit the main sector of the Caño Cristales river. After breakfast, travel for one hour by boat and jeep to the starting point of your 30-min hike to Caño Cristales. Upon arrival, swim and relax at this stunning multi-colored river surrounded by lush vegetation. Return to your lodge in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 3 - Caño Cristales
Enjoy a scenic hike through a canyon with unique flora as you visit Los Pilones, a true delight for outdoor lovers. At the end of the hike, you'll also see a new section of the river and have the opportunity to see monkeys and many exotic bird species. Upon returning to the village, stop by some souvenir shops that offer authentic handicrafts from the region.
