Hidden deep in the jungle of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in Colombia, Ciudad de Perdida, or the 'Lost City' is the heart of the local indigenous culture. Built by the Tairona people around 700 AD, the archaeological site only became an attraction after it was uncovered in the 1970s.

WHAT TO EXPECT


Day 1

Hop onboard a jeep and travel for about 2.5 hours towards the Mamey Trail in Machete Pelao where you'll enjoy a sumptuous local lunch. Then, start your trek for approximately 8 km, passing by gorgeous natural pools where you can take a quick dip in. In the late afternoon, arrive at Adan or Alfredo, your cabin for the night.

Day 2 

Wake up to the sound of nature, have breakfast, and continue your trek passing through the Wiwa Camp. Enjoy lunch at the camp and have a refreshing swim at the Buritaca River. The tour continues to the border of Mutanyi, an indigenous town inhabited by the Kogiu ethnic group. Here, you'll learn a lot about the interesting indigenous cultures of the Sierra Nevada. The second night will be spent at the Paraiso Teyuna Camp.

Total trekking distance: 15 km (9 miles) | 8-9 hours

Day 3

After about an hour of trekking, arrive at Ciudad Perdida, named Teyuna by the Tairona people and known as the Lost City to many. Climb 1200 steps, passing terraces built over a thousand years ago, until reaching the archaeological remains that were the foundations of the main settlement of the disappeared Tayrona culture. Immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the scenery as you learn more about the Lost City from your guide. During the tour, you can also swim in the well of youth which has wonderful healing properties according to legend. After the tour, descend to Paradise Teyuna to take lunch, then start your trek to the Wiwa cabin where you'll spend the night.

Day 4

Start your trek early in the morning and arrive in Mamey after about 8-9 hours. Enjoy a delicious local lunch and get to know the locals before boarding a jeep that will take you back to Santa Marta.
