A true treasure of Mali, Djenné is an ancient town straight out of a movie set. This urban commune which sits on a spit of land created by the Bani River, an oasis of peacefulness surrounded by ancient Sudanese-style mud buildings. Located halfway between Bamako and Timbuktu, a few dozen miles away from the Dogon Country, Djenné makes up for a safe and wonderful visit all Mali travelers must experience.
What to Expect:
From Segou, travel by land for about 4 hours then board a ferry that will take you to the old town. The ferry, an experience in itself, is manned by a bunch of accommodating and friendly staff. Upon arrival, visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Grand Mosque, the biggest dried mud building in the world. In front of this building is a large square that turns into a market every Monday, where locals from different corners of Mali gather to sell, buy, and exchange local produce, art pieces, animals, and so much more.
A center dedicated to the preservation of old manuscripts can also be found in the town. A number of locals have made it their mission to preserve every scroll, parchment, and books they can put their hands on. Aside from these, a shrine of a young girl who was sacrificed to save the town from a disaster can also be visited.
