Mount Karthala Day Tour from Moroni

TOUR ITINERARY:

We will start at any hotel of your choice in the island, and head to the trailhead. where we will spend half a day hiking leisurely in the forest and volcano slopes at the base.

A lot of totally endemic plants and birds, all rare by their very essence of evolving on a remote detached island, live within the forest. We will try to spot them in the woods and slopes today as we go.

Beginning of the ascent of the Karthala volcano during which we cross very varied landscapes. At an altitude of 2361m, it is the summit of the archipelago and one of the largest active craters in the world (8km in circumference). 1600m of altitude difference to the "base camp". Possibility to discover the local endemic fauna and flora such as endemic birds and medicinal plants Hike / trek 5 hours, 1600 m, hike to the summit at 2361m altitude. visit the Caldera among the largest in the world, 3km in diameter and fumaroles around the craters.

Bring as much water as you may need for the day and any snacks. 

If you opt for the overnight trip, you will spend the night in tents and enjoy a grilled dinner around a camping fire under the stars of the Southern Cross. Before descending on day 2 you will enjoy breakfast. 

*Please note a moderate to high level of physical fitness is required to summit Mount Karthala and Karthala Volcano. It is also perfectly acceptable as an alternative to do a beach and forest nature hike today rather than the summit, as an alternate.
