Leaving Kalemi and Tanganyika behind us this morning, via private car, we will begin the drive to Mwema today.
Mwema is located in the Kivu region of the DRC. The Kivu region is an area of communities that are situated around Lake Kivu. The area is known for its lush vegetation and has a higher altitude due to its position as the highest point of the African East Rift Valley (EAR). The EAR is essentially a trench that has been created as there are two tectonic plates that are separating at a rate of about 6-7mm per year. It is said that once they separate there will be a new ocean basin formed.
