【FUN FACTS】
A boat with a roof and seats where you can enjoy banquets and meals on board is called a yakatabune in Japanese. The total length of a yakatabune is about 20 meters and has the capacity for 100 people. Half of the space of the boat is used for guests. In the second oldest documented book of classical Japanese history, the Nihonshoki, it was written in the year 402 that a banquet on a yakatabune was enjoyed. During the Heian period yakatabunes were a way to entertain the nobility with music, poetry, composition and court dance, and music. As rivers improved in the Edo period, the use of yakatabunes spread to the Daimyo and the merchant classes, and it became a popular way to enjoy cherry-blossom viewing, moon viewing, and fireworks. The yakatabune in Sumidagawa was said to be gorgeous, decorated with gold and silver lacquer, but its popularity declined due to the prohibition of building large boats in the year 1682. After the Meiji Restoration, yakatabune began to be built again, but this soon lost its momentum because of changes in culture and the deteriorating quality of rivers. But thanks to the bubble economy and the improvement of water quality in the late Showa era to today, its use has increased once more.
【NEARBY AREA INSTRUCTION】
The nearby area features the Tokyo Sky Tree where you can enjoy colorful illuminations. The colors change to celebrate national anniversaries or events, but did you know that there are three basic patterns that alternate every day? The theme of the light blue pattern is called iki or chic. This theme is meant to serve as a motif of the Sumida River. The theme of the purple light pattern is called miyabi or elegance. The purple color is the color theme of Edo, and the lights are meant to sparkle like golden leaves. The theme of the orange light pattern is called nobori or banner. This color is based on the mandarin orange, which has been regarded as a lucky color since ancient times. It has the appearance of a big flag rising and lighting the surface one by one. The light at the top of the tower and the light that illuminates the steel structure across the two observation decks form a gradiation towards the base of the tower. This is meant to express the beloved Mt. Fuji with snow. The meteor-like shimmering in the upper part of the observation platform represents the past and the future.
