- Dauer: 15 Tage (ca.)
- Ort: Antananarivo
- Produkt-Code: makay
The Makay Massif is an almost otherworldy location that is yet to see a big boom in tourism. Makay Massif is a mountain formation said to be one of the last explored and most remote areas of Madagascar. The range is a research haven and has been the focal point of many scientific expeditions, as it includes an outrageous amount of biodiversity and indigenous plants, wildlife, and reptiles.
We have specialized staff and guides that live as monitors and in the bush/camps here, and deploy scientists, tracker equipment, and posts into the area and as such are able to offer a low price guarantee and customized Makay tours with over 9 different configurations for exits and entrypoints. Ask and we will customize and craft the trek, in depth with you.
There is a lot of work that has gone into and continues to go in to, ensuring the protection of this natural wonder and still many species left to discover.
Suggested Itinerary for medium fitness hikers (conservative - ask for more treks) :
Day 1: Arrive in Antananarivo (Tana)
Once you have arrived today at Ivato Airport in Antananarivo and completed your visa formalities, you're greeted and then transferred to the hotel by our representative for check-in.
Accommodation: Chalet des Roses Hotel.
Day 2: Antananarivo - Ambositra
This morning after breakfast, we will depart for Ambositra.
Ambositra is a quiet town in central highlands of Madagascar that is most famous for its wood carvings and art. Examples of the pieces are on display and readily available to purchase almost everywhere you look in the town. The woodcarving knowledge of the people in the areas is so unique that it is included on the list of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
As we drive to Ambositra today, we will arrive in the late afternoon. Madagascar is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and as we drive you'll understand why. The long drive allows for an opportunity to really observe and appreciate the different landscapes of Mada. Once we have arrived, we will have a chance to explore the life of the local villagers here in the highlands before making our way to our hotel.
Accommodation: Artisan Hotel.
Day 3: Ambositra - Ranohira
After breakfast at the hotel this morning, we will continue on to the south of Madagascar. Today is a long drive but, again, offers incredible scenery and photo opportunities. This area is largely inhabited by the Zafimaniry people, a sub-group of the Betsileo ethnic group of Madagascar.
We will arrive in Ranohira this afternoon and check-in to our hotel.
Accommodation: H1 hotel
Day 4: Ranohira – Beroroha
Once we have finished breakfast this morning, we will jump into the 4WD and begin our first adventure on a dirt road. Once we have reached the Mangoky River we will board a ferry to cross it and continue our 4X4 journey to Beroroha Village. Beoroha is a remote area made up of over 15 villages on the Mangoky River.
We will arrive at the village late this afternoon where we relax and prepare for our night of camping.
Day 5-7: Makay
Over the next few days we will begin exploring one of the most amazing places on Earth, the Makay Massif.
After breakfast each morning, you'll begin trekking the massif for the day in an attempt to experience as much of the massif as you would like.
The days will involve approximately 6 or 7 hours of hiking through an array of landscape including lakes, caves, valleys, ridges, and much much more.
Accommodation: Overnight Camping
Day 8: Makay
Today after breakfast at the camp, we will continue exploring the Makay Massif as we enter the center of it.
There is so much to explore and although it would be impossible to explore it all, the few days we have here does allow for guests to get a true feel and view of one of Mada's most unique spots and to totally be absorbed into nature.
Accommodation: Overnight Camping
Day 9-13: Makay
For the next few days, we will begin our trekking from the center to the north of the range. The variety of landscape available here seems to be endless and each direction offers many different perspectives.

Day 14: Makay – Miandrivazo - Antsirabe
This morning after breakfast as we make our way across the northern part Makay, we will visit the Malaimbandy Village.
