3-day Bicycle tour through Shimanami Kaido, Shikoku

Explore Onomichi, Innoshima, Omishima, Imabari, and Ikuchi Island on this 3-day adventure through Shimanami Kaido. This 70 km long route is one of Japan's National Cycle Routes. The route is the first in Japan to allow cyclists to cross a sea strait. This route has no large inclines so it can be comfortably completed in a day by intermediate cyclists. Rent your bicycle at one end of the route and drop it off at Imabari Island. If you become tired at any point of this journey you can drop the cycle nearby and take a bus for the rest of the journey.


Day 1: Onomichi to Innoshima

  • Meet at Hiroshima Airport aroumd 10 - 10:30 AM. 

  • Head to Onomichi Port. It will take around 2 hours from Hiroshima Airport to reach there. Here you can rent a suitable cycle for taking all the preparation for the journey ahead.

  • Board a ferry to Mukoujima around 1 PM. It will take around 30 minutes to reach the destination. It will be the starting point of this bicycle adventure.  

  • Head to Innoshima through the Shimanami Kaido on your Cycle. Relish the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea. Once you complete this journey, you can take some rest at Hotel Innoshima. There will be no other hectic schedule for the day. If you feel a bit energetic, you can explore the castles and shrines of this island. Dinner will be served at Hotel Innoshima around 9 PM.

Day 2: Innoshima to Imabari Island

  • Start your day with a healthy breakfast at Hotel Innoshima.

  • There will be no hectic schedule in the morning. You can board the hotel’s free shuttle bus to explore Innoshima Island. 

  • Around 10 AM, begin the journey on your cycle to our next destination, Imabari Island. We will cross through Ikuchi Island and Tatara Island on the way. Enjoy the views of the mandarin-orange fields of Ikuchi Island. The island is known as "Lemon Island". Next cross Tatara Island known for its ancient Iron making tradition.

  • Head to the 4-kilometer-wide Oshima island. This uninhabited island is home to a large, active volcano and is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Cross the Oshima bridge while enjoying the mesmerizing views. 

  • The next stop is Hakata Island. Here delicious lunch will be served. You can rest a little while relishing the Japanese cuisine. 

  • Around 3 PM start the journey and cross the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge. This bridge was the world's longest suspension bridge structure. You will reach Imabari Island while enjoying the scenic beauty and journey through this bridge.

  • Visit the famous Itoyama Park in Imabari. This park is at the top of a hill. It allows you to enjoy the 360 views of Shimanami Kaido, Seto Inland Sea, and Mt. Takanawa. 

  • Head to Imabari station on your bicycle. Check into Imabari International Hotel where delicious dinner will be served.

Day 3: Imabari Island to Hiroshima

  • Start the morning with a healthy breakfast at the hotel.

  • Board the bus to visit the Kirosan Park. This park is located at the top of the Mt. Kiro. The view from here is known as the most spectacular on the Shimanami Kaido. On fine days the view extends as far as Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in western Japan.

  • The next stop is Miyajimaguchi. Head there by the bus. Take the ferry to Aki No Miyajima. You will have around 3 hours to explore this place. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan's three most scenic spots. It's been considered a holy site and is home to the Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine and its "floating" torii gate are built over water. 

  • After exploring Miyajima head back to Miyajimaguchi by a ferry. Around 6-7:30 PM board the bus to Hiroshima airport by bus. This will be the end of this adventurous trip. Fly safely back to your home with the unforgettable memories of this amazing adventure.
