Nagoya Castle (80 min)

The symbol of Nagoya, Nagoya Castle, was constructed in 1612 at the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. Afterwards, part of the castle was lost in a fire, but the main keep was rebuilt in 1959. The castle is famous in Japan for the golden tiger-headed dolphin ornaments on the roof. These ornaments are based on a mythical fish-like creature known as 'shachihoko'. The paintings on the walls and sliding doors have been designated by Japan as Important Cultural Assets, and there are also many sets of armor and swords on display. The best view of the castle is in spring when about 1,000 cherry blossom trees are in bloom.
