Best of Grand Comore Tour : Sweet and Cheap Value Package Tour - Grand Comore 5 Days 4 Nights Inclusive Tour from Moroni

One of the most historic and vital islands in the Indian Ocean for navigators throughout history, and a hideout for pirates and privateers gone MIA, Grand Comore is one of the most remote and least-visited islands in the world with thundering Karthala volcano and verdant jungles replete with endemic wildlife evolved in isolation, even from Madagascar! Come check it out as an afterward or addendum to your trip.

Day 1:

Arrive today at Moroni airport, where you will be met with a warm salutation and then begin land transfer to the hotel after briefly touring the city, the lively capital of Grand Comore and the Comoros Islands. Installation at the hotel where the decor and design is also composed of huge real baobabs that are home to colonies of fruit bats and makis (lemurs)!!

Day 2:

We start up the day with a pickup at your hotel, after breakfast, and head to the entrance to the jungle path into Karthala. From here we spend a day staging an incursion deep into the nature of the island and through the forest and volcano at the center of Grand Comore, which last erupted about 15 years ago and supplies the nutrients (and beautiful black sand) of the green isle and seashore, exploring with a veteran local guide in the archipelago, looking for live rare species in the evergreen slopes, and will also stop at the archeological dig of "the dragon path" on the way back.

We will start at any hotel of your choice in the island, and head to the trailhead, where we will spend half a day hiking leisurely in the forest and volcano slopes at the base. It can take the whole day for the roundtrip circuit through the evergreen conifer forest to the black sand and lava summit area with bizarre vegetation, so bring as much water as you may need for the day and any snacks.

A lot of totally endemic plants and birds, all rare by their very essence of evolving on a remote detached island, live within the forest. We will try to spot them in the woods and slopes today as we go.

On the way back down and back to town, and depending on your pace, if there is time and the researchers and locals have opened it to the public, we may stop at the "dragon" dig and archeological site here, a few km away (small island, but lots of nature and history.)

*Please note a moderate to high level of physical fitness is required to summit Mount Karthala and Karthala Volcano. It is also perfectly acceptable as an alternative to do a beach and forest nature hike today rather than the summit, as an alternate.

Day 3:

We start up the day with a pickup at your hotel, after breakfast, and head around the circle road of the island to take in the towns, mosques, markets, history, and the BEST food and favorite secluded beach spots to make the most of your time on a trip or excursion. ---- and you don't have to drive! From here we spend the first part of the day sweeping through the mosque of Iconi and combing the haunts and history of the original inhabitants of the Comoran archipelago, who brushed the fame and fortunes of the Portugese traders and Magellan all the way to Captain Cook and the Libertalia Pirates. We head out to delve into spices and flavors that the island generates for the world...from Chanel Number 5's ylang ylang (the "flower of flowers" to bourbon vanilla (the "bourbon isles" were this chain spanning Comoros to Madagascar (where the plant was first grown in Nosy Be) down to Reunion (the inventor of the pollination method) and Mauritius. The bintang snack, coconut rolled with garlic and spices, is our evergreen favorite, but there is tons of delights to discover! We hit the white and black sand beaches of the ring road and circumnavigate the volcano the rest of the day, taking in some of the best and most secluded spots to last us up until sunset.

We will start at any hotel of your choice in the island, and head to the Iconi mosque first, where we will spend half a day meandering in the markets and mosques and labyrinthine sinews of the Comorian towns and souks. We will taste some snacks and spices/flavors that are famed and endemic (and historic) in Comoros too, and then hit the ring road to circle the island's black and white sand beaches while gazing up at the monstrous volcanic slopes of might Mt Karthala at the base. It can take the whole day for the roundtrip circuit through the island to the black sand and white sand beaches and stretches where we can have a picnic and enjoy swimming and serenity, so bring as much water as you may need for the day and any comfort snacks.

A lot of totally endemic plants and birds, all rare by their very essence of evolving on a remote detached island, live within the forest and some around the rock outcroppings lining the coast. We will try to spot them in the nature and cliffs today as we go.

*Please note that while we can try, we cannot guarantee dietary or special allergy requirements on this tour as all of the food and ingredients are from real local Comorian vendors and growers, and they generally do not adhere nor acknowledge nor unfortunately much care about dietary restrictions. if this may pose a problem, it is perfectly acceptable to also opt out on trying any of the food or drinks on the tour.
