Fort Dauphin (Ehoala) Port Culture and Culinary Discovery Day Tour / Shore Excursion

For those not in the mood to drive tons of hours roundtrip on rough roads to see all the lemurs jumping like your vehicle at Berenty, this awesome tour of indulgence, culture, nature, food, drink, and relaxation is for you! We will take in the culinary and coast-cruising delights of the southeastern cities, and let you taste the bounties of the farms, forests, and fisheries of Earth's Most Unique island. A perfect "day off and out" tour in one of Madagascar's most interesting corners, while still getting immersed in culture and sites!

Itinerary:

8 am or early morning pickup at the hotel (or ship gate before immigration and the gangway if you are cruising) by MTT crew. This morning we head to the hills and take a spin around "Tola," the town formerly and formally known as Fort Dauphin, and the southeasternmost major city in Madagascar today severed from the faraway capital by bad and remote rural roads.

We will first head into local markets and central distribution facilities for meat, fruits and vegetables, and fish of the region to see the intake of such bounty from Madagascar's farms and forests, and meet some of the denizens and farmers and fishermen who bring it all in. We'll also spin out to a few rice stockpiles and rice farms, a staple that sailed across the ocean from Java and Borneo ages ago with the original inhabitants of Madagascar, and that generally backbones the dishes like Ravototo and Ramozava that are the most common family meals in Madagascar. The morning will give you an introduction to not only the economy but the modern culture and everyday life of everybody here.

We will have a brief lunch on the seaside before we head to a hosted kitchen where the chef brought from Madagascar's cutting-edge caliber of cooking ranks will prep a station and stage for spices, fruit, chocolate, and seafood dishes. Cinnamon, Vanilla, clove, or other spice themes will be used in entrees, main courses, and deserts (and even arranged house rums!) and a few snacks and chocolates will follow the travelers on their way that day.

After a question, answer, drinking, and tasting session, you will take a look at some of the finer beach views of the bay rounding Dauphin and looking out at the Indian Ocean, and swim if you'd like, before being returned for onship time or to a dropoff point of their choice, in late afternoon.
